Our Mission Statement

To promote violence prevention among children by:

  • composing, recording and making available positive songs about violence prevention.
  • performing and teaching these songs in schools, pre-schools, community centres, neighbourhood houses, transition houses, hospitals and similar venues.
  • bringing violence prevention presentations to disadvantaged populations who would not otherwise be able to afford them.
  • conducting workshops for parents, caregivers and others who interact with children.
  • raising awareness about violence prevention through media campaigns, public appearances and interviews.

The West Coast Violence Prevention Society was incorporated in the Province of British Columbia by some interested friends of The Buddy System in January of 1997 (# S-36280). In November 0f 1998, we were pleased to receive tax-exempt status from Revenue Canada as a registered charity (# 86632 5285 RR0001). It was hoped that granting funds could be obtained to subsidize the good works of the group, and allow them to appear at some schools and other venues that wouldn't otherwise be able to afford their services. We are submitting grant applications to government departments, private foundations and socially aware organizations and businesses on an on-going basis. Regular funding is received from The Province of British Columbia. Additional financial support has come from Vancouver City Savings Credit Union, The Vancouver Sun Children's Fund, CKNW Orphan's Fund, Face The World Foundation, Hemlock Printers, Intrawest Corporation, Kiwanis Club of North Vancouver, North Shore Credit Union Foundation, North Vancouver Community Foundation, The Vancouver Foundation, Victoria Foundation and West Vancouver Foundation. The present economic climate has regretfully resulted in the reduction of funding to schools, the primary vehicle for the Society's message. We hope that funding will one day be available to allow the development of other related shows on the issues of non-violence, perhaps directed at different age groups and performed in different venues. Other plans include workshops for families and an interactive workbook and video game.
