SUE MALCOLM has been a mainstay of the Vancouver folk and bluegrass scene since 1980 as a performer, instructor and organizer. She was a founding member of The Pacific Bluegrass and Heritage Society, and has been elected President of the organization four times.
Sue has taught guitar and singing for many years at the BC Bluegrass Workshop, the Georgia Strait Guitar Workshop, the North Vancouver Recreation Commission, and Coquitlam School District Continuing Education.
Recognized for her ability to help beginners gain confidence and enjoy making music in a group setting, Sue developed the very popular Slow Pitch Jam method of teaching bluegrass jamming. For the past few years she has been presenting this unique workshop at festivals in BC, Alberta and Washington. The Slow Pitch Jam has been presented at Wintergrass, The Blueberry Bluegrass Festival, Coombs Bluegrass Festival, Sooke River Bluegrass Festival and the Vancouver Island MusicFest among others. Sue has been leading monthly Slow Pitch Jams at the ANZA Club in Vancouver for six years, sponsored by the Pacific Bluegrass and Heritage Society.
Sue currently sings and plays guitar in the Vancouver bluegrass band Rhythm Roundup. She has released three CDs, the latest being her 2005 solo project Highrise Lonesome, a collection of bluegrass and western swing.
With a background in education and counselling, Sue developed a travelling children's show called The Buddy System in 1995. The trio presented songs for young children that support school Violence Prevention programs. They travelled around Southern BC performing for over a decade. In 2004 The Buddy System was awarded the Innovation Award from Volunteer Vancouver.
A strong belief in the power of music to enrich lives and build communities keeps Sue looking for new ways to involve and inspire others.
